After a phenomenal 4-1 start to kick off bowl season, we move to round 2 of Senator’s Stub second installment of Bowl Picks. Let’s get to it!
Reminder: There are 40 bowl games this year, and like any responsible adult, we will be betting on all 40.
Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl – UAB (-2.5) v Northern Illinois, O/U 43
December 18th, 7:00pm EST
The smart move for this game is the under, as UAB ranks 62nd in scoring offense and UNI ranks 120th. However, we have a rule here at Highly Unlikely and that is “Never Bet the Under.” So let’s look at the spread. This should be a close game and 2.5 is a good number. I think the main deciding factor for this game will be lack of offense for UNI, which should help the Blazers to a victory.
The Pick: UAB -2.5
DXL Frisco Bowl – Ohio (-2.5) v San Diego State , O/U 53.5
December 19th, 8:00pm EST
This is an interesting match-up between an Ohio offense that scores 40 points per game (ppg) and a SDSU defense that is only allowing 22 ppgs. While Ohio has had an impressive year scoring, I think SDSU’s defense will slow them down. Ohio has a prolific running game, but SDSU is only allowing 95 rushing yards per game. SDSU’s defense will be the deciding factor in this matchup
The Pick: SDSU +2.5 (Buy the hook to +3 if you can – We did and so should you)
Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl- Marshall v South Florida (-3), O/U 55
December 20th, 8:00pm EST
I feel bad for South Florida, they started the season on fire at 7-0 to then go out and lose their next 5. On the other hand, you have a Marshall team that had an impressive 8-4 season and played solid defense throughout the year, which I believe will be the deciding factor
The Pick: Marshall -3
Makers Wanted Bahamas Bowl – Florida International v Toledo (-6), O/U 68.5
December 21st, 12:30pm EST
Warm weather and lots of points will be the name of this game, not to mention that I’ll be hungover on an Amtrak train on my way to my parent’s home for Christmas. Both teams are averaging over 34 ppgs and I believe that trend will continue. Additionally, I think 6 points is a lot of points to lay, and real like the underdog in this game.
The Pick: FIU +6
Bonus Pick: Over 68.5
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl – Western Michigan v. BYU (-12), O/U 49.5
December 21st, 4:00pm EST
I cannot believe this is a real matchup in a bowl game, and I cannot believe BYU is a 12 point favorite in anything. This could be a 7-6 snooze-fest. BYU has an offense that ranks 94th in scoring offense, while WMU has a scoring defense that ranks 103rd. This game could go a lot of different ways, but in an circumstance, I think 12 points is too many
The Pick: Western Michigan +12
