We are five days away from the start of College Bowl Season, arguably one of the most exciting times of the year. Bowl season means being home for the holidays, sitting on your parent’s couch throwing back a few Mad Elf’s while watching bowls sponsored by companies that you didn’t know existed.
There are 40 bowl games this year, and like any responsible adult, we will be betting on all 40. In Part 1 of Senator Stub’s Bowl Preview, we will be taking a look at all five games that will be played next Saturday, December 15th.
AutoNation Cure Bowl – Tulane (-3.5) v Louisiana, O/U 59
December 15th, 1:30pm EST
The inaugural bowl matchup of 2019 is between the AAC’s Tulane Green Wave and the Sun Belt’s Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns. Both teams have had a fairly average season with Tulane going 6-6 and Louisiana going 7-5. The Ragin’ Cajuns do have the offensive edge by averaging 32.5 points per game (ppg), while the Green Wave’s defense lets up a mediocre 28 ppg. One additional tidbit is Louisiana is an impressive 9-4 this season. This is a true degenerate’s bet.
The Pick: Louisiana +3.5
New Mexico Bowl – North Texas v Utah State (-9), O/U 66.5
December 15th, 2:00pm EST
This game will be all about points. North Texas comes in avg. 36 ppg, led by junior quarterback and 2x C-USA OPOY, Mason Fine. While Utah States is averaging a staggering 47 ppg, and led by sophomore QB Jordan Love. Utah State has been a personal betting favorite all year for me, going 9-3 ATS this year, but I think nine points is a lot to lay. This game should be exciting to watch, and a nice little treat on a Saturday afternoon.
The Pick: Over 66.5
Mitsubishi Motors Las Vegas Bowl – Arizona State v Fresno State (-4), O/U 51.5
December 15th, 3:30pm EST
In what many might consider a successful season, Herm Edwards led the Sun Devils to a semi-impressive 7-5 record, and a bowl showdown against the MWC Champions, Fresno State Bulldogs. I have one solid rule when it comes to gambling – Never trust the Pac-12. Fresno is coming off back-to-back double digit win season, and has one of the best defenses in the country – Fresno hasn’t allowed more than 27 points all season and has only allowed 20 or more points four times this year. Go Bulldogs.
The Pick: Fresno State -4
Raycom Media Camellia Bowl – Georgia Southern (-1) v Eastern Michigan, O/U 47.5
December 15th, 5:30pm EST
In essential a pick’em game, we have the 9-3 Georgia Southern taking on 7-5 Eastern Michigan. EMU’s seven wins this season have come against FCS Monmouth and six teams with a combined unimpressive record of 24-48. Meanwhile, Georgia Southern is a triple option team, which makes defensive coordinator’s nightmare because it’s one of the most impossible schemes to slow down. Give me the Eagles.
The Pick: Georgia Southern -1
R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl – Middle Tennessee State v Appalachian State (-7), O/U 50.5
December 15th, 9:00pm EST
This has potential to be the best game on Saturday. App State is a great all-around team and the Sun Belt Conference champs. Meanwhile, MTSU is coming off a heart-breaking lose in the C-USA championship game to UAB. The Stockstills will have a great game, but App State will be too much in the end.
The Pick: App State -7
